Client Challenge
The HSE required a world-class radiotherapy treatment centre for oncology patients across the southern region, bringing eight treatment bunkers, brachytherapy, CT diagnostics and treatment support together within a single facility. The building needed to accommodate advanced medical technology, allow for future innovation and meet demanding clinical, safety and energy requirements.rnrnThe challenge was to reconcile this technical complexity with a calm, patient-focused environment. Extensive medical equipment and radiation protection requirements, including high-density concrete walls and roof slabs up to 2.7 metres thick, had to be accommodated on a compact site with limited opportunities for natural light.
Hyceon’s Solution
Working closely with clinical teams and end users, MCA refined room adjacencies, patient flows and technical requirements around the patient journey. A central atrium brings daylight deep into the building, connects patient areas and supports intuitive wayfinding. Natural imagery, carefully considered colour and less institutional approaches to bunker access further reduce the clinical character of the environment while maintaining the rigorous functionality required for treatment.
