Client Challenge
With existing radiotherapy equipment approaching the end of its serviceable life, the HSE needed to deliver a new treatment centre to maintain and advance cancer care for oncology patients across the west and north of the country. The facility brings together six radiotherapy treatment bunkers, brachytherapy, CT and MRI diagnostics and treatment support within a highly specialised clinical environment.rnrnComplex ground conditions, undocumented services and structures, demanding room adjacencies and radiation shielding of up to 2.7 metres of high-density concrete added significant technical challenges. Separate enabling and infection-control works were undertaken ahead of the main construction programme to mitigate delivery risk and protect patients within the operational hospital campus.
Hyceon’s Solution
Extensive collaboration with clinical teams ensured that technical requirements did not compromise the patient experience. A central atrium brings daylight into the deep-plan building and supports intuitive wayfinding, while natural imagery, carefully considered patient routes and less institutional approaches to bunker access create a calmer environment around an inherently complex treatment journey.
