Client Challenge
Delivering a major six-storey extension within a fully operational hospital required careful integration of multiple specialist clinical services while maintaining continuity for patients, staff and existing facilities throughout construction.
Hyceon’s Solution
The new building brings together a neurological centre, Acute Stroke Unit, inpatient and outpatient Cystic Fibrosis Units, Specialist Breast Unit, Dermatology Unit and hospital canteen. Developing the design required extensive engagement with five hospital departments to establish individual clinical requirements, room adjacencies and shared accommodation. The technical brief also included ten isolation rooms, each requiring dedicated mechanical ventilation and air-pressure regimes.rnrnSignificant enabling works were carefully sequenced around the live hospital environment, including demolition of the existing canteen and provision of temporary catering and car-parking facilities before the main works progressed. The completed development demonstrates how detailed stakeholder coordination, technical design and phased delivery can bring complex clinical services together while protecting the operational continuity of a busy acute hospital campus.
